Residual Currents investigates containment, exposure and material traces at the meeting point of the River Blackwater and the North Sea on Mersea Island.

A one-minute video documents waves repeatedly striking and submerging a solitary steel sea-defence pole. Viewed through a small circular aperture within a hand-built ceramic bowl, the moving image brings the sea into an intimate sculptural encounter.

The work draws attention to cycles of appearance, disappearance, erosion and return, and to the traces left by environmental and human intervention.

Winner, Mannington Nature Award, 2026.
